To invest in the future of our friends, we want to make education a reality for them. We have three schools near us that the neighbor kids go to—one Thai school and two Burmese schools for migrant children. We do our best to encourage schooling and try to find ways to keep kids attending school. We are the bus stop for one school, and we sometimes are the bus if too many kids miss it! We are available for English homework help through the school year, and also provide access to additional learning materials at our house, including multilingual books, computer practice, and educational games.
During the summer months, we have started hosting a summer program that provides additional English practice, math practice, and other activities for all ages.
In the future, we hope to expand Schoolhouse in two ways. The first is a breakfast program before school for malnourished families. We hope to begin this in June 2017, when the 2017 school year begins in Mae Sot. We also hope to provide a Burmese literacy class for the adults and some children who are not able to go to school, but who would benefit from literacy in their first language.
